New York
Love Me New York
The city that never sleeps. To experience New York is one of life’s most exciting travel experiences. The bustle and bright lights of this city that feels like you’re on a movie set with every street you walk down and every corner you turn, and there’s no doubt that at one time or another there probably was an iconic movie or TV show being filmed on that very location.
You can’t help but immerse yourself in New York city and visit every quintessential landmark, places that you’ve seen time after time in the movies that you need to experience for yourself. The unforgettable Empire State and Chrysler Buildings with all of their glorious at deco features, hopping on the Staten Island Ferry to view the Statue of liberty as she stands there as a symbol of Freedom and Independence, Times square in all of its neon light brilliance, the architectural grandeur of the Grand Central Terminal and the sheer size and beauty of Central Park.
The New York museums are second to none. The world renowned Metropolitan Museum of Art is the largest art museum in the world and houses over two million works, we happened to catch the incredible Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations, it was breath taking to say the least. The exhibition compares the two fashion designers from different generations, the juxtaposition of the two designers displays an interesting merge of Schiaparelli’s timeless theatrical elegance and Prada’s bold and bright minimalist designs. Just incredible!
My trip to New York was straight after I graduated from University, I took my boys on a great big adventure, in fact it was a one way ticket around the world with many stops leaving from Sydney to – San Francisco (road tripping for a couple of weeks to arrive in LA – New York – London – Paris then home. It was pretty epic, but I knew as soon as I landed home it was time to set up my new found love in screen printing and fabric design. The whole trip was full of inspiration and design ideas, but first there was the task of setting up a studio to work from. An opportunity come up to rent a great warehouse space in the old Norco dairy shed in Mullumbimby in Northern NSW. It was a light filled open space that had enough room for a fabric print table, a work bench, wash out trough and a fabric cutting table. There was a lot to do to get my studio up and running so as far as sitting down and designing fabrics goes I was pushing it to say the least, I really needed the time to settle in and find my new groove, but I did manage to print what was to become the first of many in my homewares collections and although it was a bit of trial and error it was so much fun, and such a relief that I was finally on my way to what would become – my happy place –
